FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sacramento County Division of Public Health has confirmed that a Florin High School student has been diagnosed with active tuberculosis (TB). This student is currently isolated at home and under care. There is no longer a risk of exposure to students and staff at the school.

Letters have been mailed to the parents of all students who may have been exposed. Currently Public Health will only be testing students and staff who shared a classroom with the diagnosed student. Public Health and Florin High School have scheduled a time to provide screening tests. Those that have a positive screening test will be evaluated further.

Exposure to a person with active disease must be close and prolonged for others to become infected with TB. The majority of people who have been infected with tuberculosis have latent TB infection and do not develop active tuberculosis disease. Those with Latent TB do not have symptoms and do not transmit the bacteria to others. Both inactive (latent) tuberculosis infection and active tuberculosis disease can be successfully treated with antibiotics.

"Public Health is working closely with school officials to proactively investigate and screen any potential exposures," said Sacramento County Public Health Officer Dr. Olivia Kasirye. "We want to focus first on those in the same classrooms as the diagnosed student, so that we can quickly evaluate them and provide preventive treatment."

If parents have any concerns or questions, they may call Florin High School at (916) 689-8600.
